Sworn To Raise

Sworn to Raise (Courtlight #1)Sworn to Raise by Terah Edun
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Sworn to Raise had me at the blurb and the back of the book synopsis

My favorite thing about this book is actually the subtlety of the romance (gotta love those LONG DRAWN OUT ROMANCES) and the fact that it isn’t really a love triangle type book.

swoon She Would Read

Is she a special snowflake? A little bit. (But I don’t always hate that plot line if it’s done well.) Did I like the book enough to read the next 2 of the 6 books in the series. Well, yes.

I love the IDEA of the plot but the execution of it I found to be lacking. Maybe it’s just me. Maybe another revision or two would have brought her reviews up as a whole. Maybe the writing style has potential but needs re-structuring and polishing. Maybe it’s Maybelline.

Because of those things (or maybe in spite of them), I was able to read the book, but I had to be a lot more intentional to get through some of the slower and sometimes even disconnected feeling parts. Once I figured it out though, I was actually kind of grateful that I pushed through because I would reach an interesting twist or development in the story that would make me want to read more.

In this particular book, we get to watch a version of the Bachelorette on magical steroids (which reminded me a bit of the Biblical story of Esther), some different magical world building, the preparation for a high stakes, political plot coup. It was a lot of foundation for the rest of the books.

It has all the right elements for a good story but put together a little haphazardly. It was good enough to read the second and third books. And just know, they did get better.
