Sworn To Conflict

Sworn to Conflict (Courtlight, #3)Sworn to Conflict by Terah Edun
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

In this third installment of the Courtlight series, the author continues to improve her writing and delivery of an incredibly layered fantasy story in which we follow Ciardis and Sebastian through the complex, political realms as they try to protect Sebastian’s seat as the Royal Heir.

Finally, we start to see more traction in their relationship, the story telling gets better and the pieces are starting to come together. Yowza. It’s been a journey though to get here but this book made the wait worth it.

Ciardis has grown as a character, much more consistent and likable. The story continues to be creative, imaginative and pushes the envelope of what I’ve read in YA fantasy. However, it did so almost to a fault. It was hard to keep up. Plot twist after plot turn after plot flip had me spinning and say, “Wait, what? Who is that again? Oh, right now I remember.”

It’s just so many layers, which is great if you keep them separated enough to make sense and intertwined enough to make it cohesive.

I’d like to pick up the next book but I’m not sure I will. I’ve given this series three chances and as much as I want to know what happens with Ciardis and Sebastian, I’m just not sure I’ll do it. I heard rumblings there may be a love triangle brewing in the next book…

I don’t know. Maybe. I do love those drawn out love romances.
