Chasing River

Chasing River (Burying Water, #3)Chasing River by K.A. Tucker
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is the third book in the Burying Water series, but my first introduction to K.A. Tucker. It could easily be read as a standalone but felt that I would have enjoyed it more given the context of the previous two books.

This was a romance with crime drama and a touch of history that added depth to the romantic storyline. This book had an ok pace and flow. I loved the first encounter between Amber and River but began to have a hard time with how Amber recklessly threw herself at River, who played the bad-boy bartender gentleman. That particular aspect felt a little indulgent and unrealistic and took depth away from the characters. I took off a point for that.

I was intrigued by the friendship dynamic of Amber and Ivy. I liked the way they unexpectedly play off of each other and simultaneously use each other all the while finding redemption for their 'friendship' if it can even be called that.

I also like the alternating point of views. I felt that it was done well. Also hearing each person's thoughts made each of them less creepy to me as the observer given the circumstances of their relationship. Amber could have looked like a stalker and River could have looked like an opportunist creep if it had been told one-sided.

I felt like things wrapped up a little too perfectly and too easily and I wanted to dock another point for personal preference. but didn't. I would have liked to see the couple overcome some slightly more difficult obstacles to be with each other. I think that would have been more satisfactory.

Tucker is an excellent author and I loved her ability to weave crime drama and history into this story.
