Hickville Confessions

Hickville Confessions (Hickville High, #2)Hickville Confessions by Mary Karlik
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I received this ARC Copy from NetGalley in exchange for my review

In a nutshell, it’s the screenplay SAVED! with Mandy Moore and Macauley Caulkin set in Texas with slightly different plot in Texas. (which is not a bad thing, in my opinion.)

Although riddled with all of the unnecessary high school drama, I was surprisingly pleased with this novel. I think the title suggested something a little less heavy than the topics discussed so I was intrigued when these teens did not have typical circumstances thrust upon. It did discuss issues that teens are facing today.

But I felt it was a bit overkill.

Certainly no relationship is perfect, nor is any family but these kids and their families put together is a perfect storm in real life. Their happy ending was a bit fantastic in the sense of ‘fantasy’ and a little anti-climactic.

Overall, I thought the relationship would be redemptive to both parties but that wasn’t quite the case. It just kind of glossed over things.
Main Characters:

Ryan: I had a hard time believing that she would be the type of person that attracts bullies but I guess that is the nature of bullying- it doesn’t always make sense.

Justin: A great character setup up for a redemption story but I felt he was still really needy until just right before the end.

Plot and pacing:

I liked the plot and pacing.

Inconsistencies/Loose Ends:

I definitely felt like there were some loose ends as a result of that authors desire to interlink her stories. I felt like it would be worthwhile to read the pre-story and I’m definitely interested in the follow up for MacKenzie. Quite the cliff hanger.

There were sexual references, including rape. Actually, a lot of the relationships in the book revolved around sex.
